Bag ladies doing it for themselves with flair and affordability – meet the Pratten sisters

Of course, Justine and Monique Pratten are not your typical bag ladies. They launched a business selling an affordable range of handbags, wallets and purses in eel skin or PVC – you’ll find them in retailers all over Australia, New Zealand and Singapore or at

The coolest bag, I think, is the PVC tote in a range of bright colours and retailing for $90.  (Yes, I have one and it’s fabulous!)

In my column today – AFR Weekend Enterprising women – the describe how they both took different paths but when those paths converged in collaboration, Pratten was born and it’s never looked back.

Be inspired by the fact that they started at the iconic Paddington Markets, Sydney, in the late 1990s and year by year they have grown to turn over about $1million in the 2011 financial year.  Have the vision, find the niche, and go for it!

They even got an endorsement from the queen of mass-market TV – Oprah Winfrey, through her “O List” in the Oprah Magazine.  Next stop, the UK markets and South-East Asia.  Pratten, producing handbags for the world!
