Nuts about macadamias and dreaming big – Donna Burton wants to crack the UK market

Ever since she lived in London in the mid-1990s, Donna Burton has yearned to return, and her dream is to become a supplier to the big names in grocery stores in that great city, Fortnum & Mason of Piccadilly – even Harrods!

Donna launched her Jelbonleigh Macadamias about 15 years ago and has built a small but premium brand, winning awards at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show and accolades from foodies around the country. (Her story in my AFR column).

She believes her business will keep growing as bigger, traditional grocery stores tap into the trend to stock health foods, including more nut products.  Donna is among many producers – all raising the profile of macadamias. We consumers are becoming more conscious of where food is grown, how it’s harvested and packaged, and we are learning about the health benefits of nut butters and oils.

If you’re in Sydney, Donna sells at the Northside Market, North Sydney, and other markets on weekends – and you’ll also find her at the annual Sydney Royal Agricultural Society Easter Show, which is where the Jelbonleigh story began.
